Support direct from Apple is usually linked to having an AppleCare extended warranty (which lasts three years) or the original warranty the brand new computer would have.
#EL CAPITAN MAC OS MODEL REQUIREMENTS SERIAL NUMBER#
It is probably referring to the serial number of the Mac computer it is running on. If you have been trying to access official Apple support the serial number it is probably asking for is not the serial number for El Capitan which as you have seen it does not have. Basically the support person you spoke to is spouting rubbish based on Windows PC experience.

If you were by some chance using a USB Ethernet adapter then that would have its own driver and might indeed need upgrading. The NIC (Network Interface Card) driver for the built-in Ethernet port on the Mac mini is built-in to OS X and if it needed upgrading would be upgraded as part of an upgrade to OS X. Other than that it's been working fine and I'm impressed. Sooooo, I'm unable to get support on upgrading the "nic driver". Whenever I try for support I'm asked to enter the El Capital serial number, BUT there is no serial number with the download.only V10.11.

The cable company said I should upgrade the "nic driver" but I can't find any Apple support to help with that. I've only had it for two days now and the only problem I'm having is that whenever I do a start up I have to call my cable company to reset my modem from their end, otherwise El Capital will not connect to the internet. I have a MacMini (late 2009) running El Capitan.
